The residents are a mix of elderly people who have lived here for decades and renters who may only stay a few weeks or months.

Comfort & Solitude...

Miracle Place

by State Representative John J. Day
(House District 100)

I am often encouraged and inspired by the good works performed by a number of groups and organizations in our district. Such good works which improve the quality of life for the people of our area should be recognized and celebrated.

In this newsletter I want to highlight the valuable work/service performed by Sisters Barbara McClelland and Rita Ann Wade. Both are members of the Sisters of Providence, long active on the east side in education and community service and for the past seven years have served as co-directors of Miracle Place.

Established in 2000, Miracle Place at 940 N. Temple has developed into a very caring neighborhood resource center serving people of all ages. There are after school programs and tutoring for the children plus English classes for Spanish-speaking adults. Also, the Sisters have organized social activities for nearby senior citizens.

Miracle Place recently obtained a $280,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank and with the funds helped rehabilitate 20 owner-occupied homes in the neighborhood, providing needed items like new furnaces, roofs and windows. On a modest scale there are also plans to promote home ownership opportunities for area residents.

Perhaps best of all, Miracle Place brings a new spirit of hope and a renewed sense of community to the people of the neighborhood.
